Shelburne Golf and Country Club is a picturesque 18-hole golf course located on the western edge of the Niagara Escarpment.
The professionally-designed course plays over easily walked terrain with silica sand bunkers and six spring-fed ponds providing a challenge to all levels of golfers.
In the last few years 9 new tee decks, adding 230 yards to the course, were brought into play adding to the challenge for the lower handicap, long-hitting player. Playing enhancements were completed on four holes in 2007, to speed up play and provide greater visual definition to the bunkers, water hazards and fairways, along with the addition of 400 trees. Also, the automatic irrigation system was expanded to improve the overall condition and playability of the course
Shelburne Golf & CC has one of the finest practice facilities in Southern Ontario including a 10,000 square foot putting and chipping green with practice bunker and a one third of an acre grassed tee area with six strategically placed target greens.
To satisfy those food cravings the clubhouse offers homestyle cooking in a relaxed atmosphere inside or out on the patio. The clubhouse includes a licensed restaurant and banquet facilities for 160 in a beautiful new banquet room overlooking the ninth and eighteenth greens. Please note that Shelburne Golf & CC is a fully-licensed facility. The liquor laws of the Province of Ontario do not permit personal alcohol in the clubhouse, parking or golf course. On warm and busy days a beverage cart circulates throughout the course for your convenience.
The full service Proshop offers a wide range of clubs, balls, shoes, bags, shirts, sweaters, and wind and rain apparel for all golf needs.
In 1968, the San Diego Junior Golf Association founded the Junior World Golf Championship to connect young golfers from all parts of the world. Not only was our goal to provide youth with a premier golf experience, but we dreamed that the championship would build greater understanding among people of different cultures and values.
In its inaugural year, the event attracted 475 junior golfers from seven countries and 20 states. Today, the tournament has grown to 1250 participants, representing 56 countries and 42 states. The IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships is now the largest international event in the world and is unique for its international representation and cultural diversity.
It all began in February 1968 when John W Brown, A.S. "Lou" Smith, and Norrie West decided the San Diego Junior Golf Association would host the very first Junior World Golf Championship tournament. The three had dreamed of organizing a tournament where juniors from all parts of the world could come together to play golf and share in cultural exchange.
The following is taken from the 1968 Junior World Program created by Norrie West:
The idea behind the Junior World Golf Championships is simply "YOUTH." The San Diego County Junior Golf Association is founded on the principle of serving young people, in the hope that by doing so today's youth will have a better chance of creating the world we all want. The Junior World tournament is an international extension of that principle. We believe that by bringing together young people from all parts of the world and all parts of our nation, we are helping to bring about greater understanding among people of differing cultures and values.
